Welcome to Trauma Informed Pastoral Care, a course designed to help you care for people with greater wisdom, sensitivity, and confidence. In church life, we often meet people in moments of need, vulnerability, and pain. Some of what we encounter is shaped by trauma, whether recent or from many years ago. Understanding this helps us respond in ways that bring safety, not harm, and hope, not confusion.
We believe pastoral care is an expression of God’s love in action. It is about being present, listening well, and walking alongside people as they navigate life. A trauma informed approach does not turn us into experts or counsellors, but it does help us become more aware of how people experience the world and how our responses can either support or unintentionally overwhelm them.
In this course, you will be introduced to key principles that underpin trauma informed practice. You will learn how to recognise signs of trauma, respond appropriately, and create environments where people feel safe, respected, and in control. We will also explore the importance of healthy boundaries, safeguarding, and caring for your own wellbeing as you support others.
Our aim is simple. To help you move from heartfelt care to skilful care. As you engage with this course, we hope you will grow in confidence and compassion, equipped to serve people in a way that reflects the gentleness and wisdom of Jesus, and helps create a church where everyone can find safety, support, and hope.
